Key finance performance metrics

Success comes when the whole team is clear on the key metrics.

To grow your business or prepare for sale – visibility and understanding the following key financial metrics is essential:

Profit and Loss Statement – 10 measures which indicate the success of your trading activities. These first 3 are absolutely essential:

 1. Gross Profit Margin – GPM

 2. Contribution Margin – CM

 3. Net Profit Margin – NPM

In addition to the above, best practice companies also look at the following:

 4. Sales mix – client, type of services/products

 5. Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT)

 6. Productivity levels

 7. Wages as a percentage of sales

 8. Rent as a percentage of sales

 9. Overheads as a percentage of sales

10. Write off percentage

Balance Sheet Report  – this report shows how much you are worth, providing a consolidated snapshot of the value of the business at a point in time, at the end of each month and end of the financial year.

1. Liquidity

        a)    Working Capital (WC)

       b)    Quick Ratio (QR)

2. Earnings Per Share (EPS)

Earnings Per Share – is one of the more widely quoted statistics when considering share value performance.

3. Intangible asset register

If you are a creative business selling ideas, then you should also report a monthly update of your Intellectual Property (IP) rights.

These key metrics will enable you to discuss and assess your business against your own growth targets and how it compares to industry norms and competitors. Suitors will also require you to discuss the above so that they can assess viability and purchase price for an acquisition.

Are there any other measures which you look at? Staff retention? client tenure? Top 5 clients? Add them to your key metrics dashboard, and keep them up to date.
