One Conversation Could Change Your FY27

The beginning of a new financial year is an exciting time.

Budgets have been approved, revenue targets have been set, and leadership teams are focused on delivering a successful year ahead.

But before the pace of client work takes over, it’s worth asking one important question:

How confident are you that your FY27 budget will actually deliver the profit you’re expecting?

Not whether you’ve prepared a budget.

Whether you’ve built one on commercially sound assumptions.

After more than 20 years working alongside creative, marketing and communications agencies, I’ve found that the difference between a strong financial year and a disappointing one is rarely the spreadsheet itself. It’s the assumptions behind it.

Every Budget Tells a Story

A budget is much more than a collection of numbers …

It’s a story about what you believe will happen over the next twelve months. It reflects assumptions about revenue growth, pricing, utilisation, recruitment, delivery capacity, overheads and profitability. The problem is that many of these assumptions are accepted without being challenged. Questions like these often go unanswered:

  • Are your utilisation targets realistic?
  • Is your pricing keeping pace with rising costs?
  • Will your current team structure support your growth plans?
  • How much revenue do you actually need to achieve your profit target?
  • What happens if one major client delays a project?
  • Will your cash flow comfortably support your plans?

These are the commercial conversations that determine whether a budget becomes a practical leadership tool or simply an optimistic forecast.

The Earlier You Review It, the Better

One of the greatest advantages of reviewing your budget early in the financial year is that even small improvements have time to compound.

  • A modest increase in utilisation
  • A slight improvement in pricing discipline
  • Better project scoping
  • More accurate forecasting
  • Improved gross profit visibility

Individually, these adjustments might appear insignificant.

Collectively, they can make a substantial difference to profitability over twelve months.

By November, recovering from poor assumptions often requires difficult decisions.

In July or August, you still have time to influence the outcome.

Commercial Clarity Changes Behaviour

One of the most rewarding parts of my work is watching leadership teams become more confident once they have commercial clarity.

When everyone understands how pipeline, revenue, gross profit, utilisation and cash flow connect, conversations change. Hiring decisions become more strategic. Pricing becomes more confident. Forecasts become more reliable. Leaders spend less time reacting to month-end surprises and more time making informed commercial decisions.

Financial clarity doesn’t simply improve reporting

It improves behaviour across the business

Sometimes One Conversation Is All It Takes

Agency leaders often assume they need a major transformation.

In reality, many businesses are only one or two commercial insights away from significantly improving their financial performance.

Sometimes an independent review simply confirms you’re already heading in the right direction.

Other times, it uncovers assumptions that deserve another look before they become expensive mistakes.

A fresh perspective can provide confidence

challenge blind spots

and strengthen the commercial foundations that support every decision throughout the year

That’s exactly why I created the KMint 4-Week Mini CFO program. It gives agency leaders the opportunity to review their budget through the KMint Commercial Lens™, stress-test key assumptions and identify practical opportunities to improve profitability before the financial year gathers momentum.

Build Confidence Before Momentum Takes Over

Every financial year develops its own momentum.

Once client work accelerates and delivery pressures increase, finding time to step back becomes increasingly difficult.

Right now, you still have the opportunity to pause, challenge your assumptions and strengthen your commercial position.

One conversation may not change everything.

The right conversation, at the right time, can change the direction of your entire financial year

If you’re not completely confident in your FY27 budget, I’d be delighted to help you review it.

Because sometimes one conversation really can make all the difference
