Agency growth

Planning your budget for the next financial year and wondering how to outperform this one?

At KMint, I help agencies build profit-driven budgets and rigorously test their pricing strategies—so they’re not just aiming for growth, but structurally set up to achieve it.

Take one recent example: a client realised their hourly rate model was holding back revenue growth. Together, we restructured their pricing, revamped financial reporting, and introduced team incentives—resulting in a 15% net profit increase.

So, how did we get there?

It starts with building a comprehensive, thoughtful budget—one that includes new hires, bonus schemes, equipment, growth initiatives, and, of course, your profit target. Be clear on why you’re targeting that profit, and don’t forget to budget for tax.

If you are using an hourly rate model:

  • Reassess productivity levels and review time-tracking and write-offs.
  • Compare your cost per hour to your charge-out rates.
  • Evaluate whether your rate cards across clients actually support your profit goals.

Then, go further.

Explore alternative pricing models. Understand your margins. Forecast performance based on data, not guesswork.

And most importantly:

Decide who will make it happen. Incentivise your senior team and build reporting routines—weekly, monthly, quarterly—to stay on course.

Because profit isn’t just a target—it’s a system.

One common pitfall? Delegating budget-setting solely to the finance team. While finance plays a critical role, this process should also involve the senior leadership team—especially those responsible for delivering on the budget throughout the year.

Another? Averaging the annual budget evenly across 12 months. That’s not forecasting—that’s hoping. Costs hit at specific times, and knowing when they land impacts your cash flow. For small businesses, this level of visibility is essential.

And finally—after building the budget from the bottom up, few agencies take the extra step to proof-test whether it’s actually achievable. High-performing teams align early: How will we hit this target? When? A solid revenue strategy should come before the budget is signed off.
